64 - An Evening On The Trail

Back in May Rylan was back on the AT in Virginia for a week with Toothless and his group.  After a little monologue from Rylan about this web site and what we can do with it we hear the conversation from the first night from...

Thanks For Joining Us At SouthEastern Backpackers

Thanks for joining us at the new SouthEastern Backpackers site.  Never fear - we are working to get all the old podcasts and trip reports moved over.  We have been thrilled to spread so much information from hikers who've contacted us, but we haven't been able to share those stories in their entirety.  We've created this site for hikers to post stories and pictures so everyone else can enjoy them.  We'll share what we can on the podcast, but now we can direct people to the whole article posted here.   We've started with Trip Reports, Food, Gear and Tips and will add more categories as needed.  Just create an account and dive in!

CanyonMan Family trip to Rocky Mountain National Park PDF Print E-mail

We drove up from Colorado Springs, through Estes Park and into the main entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park (aka "RMNP"" or just "Rocky"). For those that have never been to or looked into RMNP, it is located in North-Central Colorado, about 2 hours North/NorthWest of Denver.

The Continental Divide runs through the middle of the park. For those who don't know what the Continental Divide is, it is basically the dividing line for North America where water that falls on the west side of the Divide runs west to the Pacific Ocean, water that falls to the east runs south and east to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. Needless to say, the mountains in RMNP are BIG. There are more than sixty (60) peaks higher than 12,000 feet, including Long's Peak at 14,259...

Homemade Solar Battery Charger PDF Print E-mail

When I was preparing for my backpacking trip to Yellowstone, one of my concerns was carrying enough batteries for my headlamp, gps and a way to recharge my iPod. At one point we were on the trail for 8 days straight with no re-supply and I did not really want to carry that much extra weight. Being the cheap pseudo-geek that I am, I did some research and opted to build my own solar battery charger. This is a VERY simple task for anyone that has the slightest bit of soldering knowledge. I found lots of great ideas from the website Instructables.com. From these ideas I ordered a flexible 7.2V panel which is .02 inches thick (yes..2/100ths) and weighs 0.9 ounces...

Eagle Creek Trek PDF Print E-mail

An alternate trail of the PCT, the Eagle Creek trail #440 is a fantastic hike. It has enough challenging sections as well as some smooth hiking. The view is what will keep you coming back. Waterfalls mark the pay off of this sweet trail. Punch bowl falls, Tunnel Falls, and many more keep your mind off the pain of a backpack or sore feet.

We recently (April 17, 2009) completed a 14 mile round trip. We hiked from the trail head at Eagle Creek campground to the 7 1/2 mile camp. About 1/2 way to the Wantum lake campground. Setting camp at the trail head on Friday night got us an early start on the trail Saturday...

Backpacking Polls???

For now I had to turn off the Polls. Thanks to several of our backpacking buddies we've discovered today that the Polls are preventing Internet Explorer 7 from loading the site. I'm working with some REAL geeks right now who are trying to figure out how to make it all work, so I'd imagine we will have the polls back on pretty soon.
