On my last hike I was experimenting with ways to keep my iPhone charged. I was only using it for entertainment, so it wasn't going to be a tragedy if I ran the battery down. But with gps apps and mapping apps, one iPhone could take the place of several other items. If it's relied on in that way, I have to have a reliable way to charge it. I mentioned my search for iPhone field chargers on a podcast and have had several discussions since then with other hikers about how they recharge their electronics. I'm beginning to formulate a podcast / vid-cast on recharging where several of us can talk together and share what has and hasn't worked.
Luckily for me a hiking buddy, Eldorado, read about a recharging device and passed it along. I would've never imagined that there could be a tent specially designed for nerds who go camping but it appears to be possible. A photovoltaic fabric produces electricity for charging our electronics, powering a heating element in the floor and running a flexible monitor which can be connected to the Internet!
I've searched all afternoon to find out what the weight is, how much it costs and if the fabric can be made into a hammock tarp. I haven't gotten anywhere, but I'm very curious. I want to be the first hiker on my block to be able to send a text message to my tent and have it light up so I can find it!
