April Fools Day dawns clear and cold. Very cold! 19 degrees F! As I watch a thin sliver of light begin creeping into the eastern skyline, it dawns on me that I’m celebrating my one year anniversary of being retired, sleeping in a tangle of cottonwood trees, in my jungle hammock. Life is good…a little chilly, but definitely good. A few months ago I was thumbing through some books at the public library and I discovered a field guide describing 50 desert hikes in Washington. Umtanum Creek popped out at me as a “blast from the past”. Back in the early 1970’s Kevin and I had motorcycle camped in the Ellensburg-Yakima Canyon at Umtanum Creek. The one thing I remember most was an all night coyote serenade performed by a cast of thousands interspersed with several rumbling freight trains. It’s a memory that was still as fresh in my mind as if it was yesterday...

Ryan arrived in Portland and we went straight to REI. Two hours later we
were at Winco stocking up at the bulk food section. Two hours later we
were at home proportioning meals, and packing everything just right.
Soon the lights were out and we laid in bed with "visions of GORP
dancing in our heads."
The next morning we hit the road with directions in hand. The first
problem occurred when we came to a fork in the road. Our directions
said "Go Straight". Huh? We took a stab at it and went left. 10 miles
later we decided that left was wrong.
No problem-- we were having fun...

Rylan
and I are at his house on our regular Thursday night stoggie time. I
thought I would write down some of my reflections concerning our recent
hiking trip on the Pinhoti Trail.
This was our second hike on Pinhoti. We have completed approximately 40+ miles of this trail.
We have discovered the trail to be one of our favorite ones to hike. It
certainly shows some of the beautiful scenery of Alabama. We do live in
such a beautiful state. In Rylan's last posting he placed some of the
pictures of our experience.

The
Pinhoti isn't well documented like the AT. We've found maps of the
Talladega National Forest and those maps have the Pinhoti marked on
them. But there's no real accurate mileage, water supply or elevation.
The national forest maps do have the roads marked well that run in and
out of the forest. Those roads aren't necessarily properly marked here
on earth though.
Finding
where the trail crosses roads has been a little challenging. Figuring
out what sections to tackle has also been a little challenging since we
really have no idea how many miles we are attempting for the weekend.
The challenge, the unknown, the mystery, the absence of information has
proven to be a major part of our fun on this trail!!

Golden,
Bill and I are just back from our latest trip on the Pinhoti Trail. I
told them I was considering making a Blog for hiking so everyone
involved could help keep others up to date on our trips and they seemed
to think that was a good idea. I just stepped in the door and naturally I dropped my pack in the corner and turned on the computer before I did anything else!
